This blog uses WordPress, which is easy to install. It uses MySQL to store everything.
I’ve stuck a bunch of themes in <home>/wp-content/themes/<theme-name>/ so I’ll probably try them all out over the next few weeks. I particularly like Brian Gardner’s designs.
I got rid of the About link in the sidebar by deleting the About page, and now I’m not sure how to get it back. Just creating a page called About didn’t do it. I’ll probably have to examine the files in the classic theme to find out.
I also got rid of the Blogroll and Admin links in the sidebar, at least for the current theme. To do that, go into the WordPress dashboard, pick the Design tab, pick Theme Editor, choose the correct file (probably sidebar.php), and comment stuff out with <!-- .. --> like this:
<!-- <li id="Admin"> <h2>Admin</h2> <ul> <?php wp_register(); ?> <li><?php wp_loginout(); ?></li> <li><a href="http://www.wordpress.org/">Wordpress</a></li> <?php wp_meta(); ?> <li><a href="http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=referer">XHTML</a></li> </ul> </li> -->
